Bone grafting, also known as regenerative surgery, is a procedure used to restore bone and supporting tissues that have been lost due to periodontitis. If you are experiencing bone loss around your teeth as a result of periodontitis, Dr. Bally may recommend a bone graft to prevent the need for extractions.
The main objective of bone grafting is to stimulate the body's natural ability to rebuild bone and the structures that anchor teeth to the jaw. To begin the procedure, the gums will be separated from the teeth to gain access to the roots and underlying bone. The roots will be thoroughly cleaned, and any empty spaces in the bone will be filled with a graft material, typically made from your bone.

Sinus Lift- Lateral Window
The lateral window sinus lift is a specialized dental procedure that enhances bone in the maxillary sinus for successful dental implant placement. Using X-rays or CT scans, the dentist evaluates the area's bone density and sinus anatomy.
Under local anesthesia, the dentist makes a small gum incision to access the bone and creates a precise window-shaped opening in the sinus's lateral wall. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, making room for bone graft material—often sourced from the patient or synthetic options—to encourage new bone growth.
After suturing the incision, patients receive specific post-operative care instructions, including medications and oral hygiene practices. Follow-up visits allow monitoring of healing and timing for implant placement.
While effective, there are rare risks like infection or sinus complications. Consulting a skilled dentist is crucial for personalized evaluation and addressing any concerns before undergoing this procedure.
RIDGE AUGMENTATION
One common application of bone grafting is for ridge augmentation, which aims to restore the natural shape of your gums and jaw after tooth loss due to various reasons such as trauma, congenital anomalies, infection, or periodontal disease.
To ensure proper support for surrounding restorations or implants, it may be necessary to reconstruct both the hard and soft tissues. When one or more teeth are lost, the gums and jawbone can become indented in the area where the tooth used to be. This occurs because the jawbone recedes when it no longer has a tooth to hold in place.
This indentation not only looks unnatural but also causes the replacement tooth to appear longer than the adjacent teeth, creating a difficult-to-clean area.
Ridge augmentation involves the use of bone and tissue-grafting procedures to fill in the indented area of the jaw and gums. This results in a smooth gum line that harmonizes with your restoration or dental implant.
